Full Description
Traces of two phases of a Roman legionary barrack block was recorded during archaeological investigations by Mr Petch at Folliot House in 1955. Slight evidence of a brief period of dereliction was noted between the two structural phases comprising several pits and quantities of waste. The barracks recorded in trenches 1 and 5 recorded a second phase of structural activity similar to that recorded in the adjacent barracks comprising an almost complete rebuilding from the foundation up. New floor surfaces were laid down as in the other barracks with a levelling layer of broken sandstone and sand capped with compacted clay and in some places traces of sandstone paving. (1)
