Description

The Knutsford Conservation Area is notable for its Georgian and Victorian buildings which line the two principal streets, King Street and Princess Street, and for the two large open spaces, each with its own character. These spaces, The Moor to the east, and The Heath to the west, contrast with each other – the first being wild, watery, and overlain with reed beds, the second being partly wooded, undulating, and with a large, open common. The difference in height between King Street and Princess Street allows attractive views across the town, punctuated by the prestigious 19th century buildings in Toft Road, and by Watt’s towers in King Street and Drury Lane. Finally, the trees and entrance gates to Tatton Park provide a reminder of the proximity of Tatton Hall, although this is not visible from the conservation area. The Knutsford Conservation Area can be divided into six character areas, according to the styles and age of the buildings, and their function. Additionally, two areas are notable for their landscape, and buildings play a much more limited part. The areas are: 1) Town Centre: King Street, Princess Street and Minshull Street 2) The Moor 3) Tatton Park and Drury Lane 4) The Heath and Gaskell Avenue 5) King Edward Road and Toft Road 6) The Station and Adam’s Hill
