<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 1996, The Angel, 96 King Street, Knutsford, Cheshire: An Archaeological Watching Brief, R2147 (Client Report). SCH4071.
An archaeological watching brief, undertaken in August 1996, at The Angel Public House, 96 King Street, Knutsford, identified pockets of rich archaeological deposits dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Significantly, orgainic material, such as leatherwork and wood, survived in the moist soils above the clay subsoil. An analysis of the organic remains indicates that shoemaking was one of the trades practising in the area during the late medieval period. In the centre of the watching brief area, an 18th century, brick-lined well was recorded.
