Summary

Grade II Listed, timber-framed house, located on the west side of King Street, Knutsford. Sixteenth century or earlier, refronted in 1907. Now in commercial use. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

NGR: SJ7526278604: Grade II Listed house, now in commercial use. C16 or earlier, refronted 1907. Timber-framed and brick with slate roof. 2-storeyed, the main gable facing street with small range at right angles, parallel to street. Gabled range apparently the earliest part of the building, although it is possible that the right-angled range has been rebuilt. Gabled range refronted, but side elevation framed in large square panels with arch-bracing, with intermediate horizontal and vertical rails, 3 bays deep. Inserted windows in this facade, but the remains of a wood mullioned window at ground floor. Facade to street dated 1907: brick to ground floor with 6-light shop window, the doorway in the right-hand return. The cambered tie beam in the gable may be original, the rest of the facade clearly dates from 1907. Right-hand bay rendered, probably over brick. 6-light shop window to ground floor, and 3-light gabled dormer in roof. INTERIOR: not inspected.

(Formerly Listed as: KING STREET Nos.48 AND 50)
