Abstract/Summary

During construction of King's Mews, St Martin's Way, Chester, a main foul drain was inadvertently damaged. As a consequence a major diversion of the drainage system in this area was required. The area lies within the former defensive walls of the Roman Fortress, close to the NW corner, and as part of the drain realignment, the diverted service passed beneath the west arm of the defences. The resulting watching brief and excavation identified multi-phased activity of Roman and possibly sub-Roman date and confirmed that highly important archaeological remains survive in this area of the city.
