Abstract/Summary

Desk-based assessment supplemented with field evaluation for the area to the north-west of Middlewich, some 47 acres, affected by the by-pass linking the A54 Holmes Chapel road and the B5309 King Street. Field evaluation comprised a combination of field walking and selective trial-trenching (15 trenches in total), in particular to investigate ditches apparent on air photographs, also areas close to known area of Roman settlement to the west of the evaluation site. The only archaeological features found were ditches of indeterminate date (trench 1), a post medieval ditch probably dug for drainage (trench 3), and a bank feature sealing a ditch, both of uncertain date, possibly representing a field boundary or drainage feature. (trench 13).
