Full Description

<1> Gifford and Partners, 1992, Archaeological Evaluation at King Street, Middlewich, Cheshire., R2056 (Client Report). SCH4167.

Air photographs dating to 1973, 1983 and 1985, held in the SMR, were consulted as part of a desk-based assessment and field evaluation, undertaken in 1992, prior to the proposed development of 19.6ha of land east of Middlewich town centre, between King Street and the moated site of Kinderton Hall (SMR753). A rectangular enclosure about 110m by 80m was clearly visible on the photographs. Two trial trenches located a ditch 2m wide by 0.4m deep in the position of the cropmark. No artefacts were found.

<2> Gifford and Partners, 1995, Report On An Archaeological Excavation At Kinderton Hall Farm, Middlewich, Cheshire., R2107 (Client Report). SCH4144.

17 further trial trenches were dug in a later excavation in 1995. There were no finds. It was concluded that the features did not in fact represent a single, rectangular enclosure, but rather a series of linear features. These were interpreted as infilled ditches and gulleys which represent relict land divisions and drainage channels dating from the medieval period. It is thought that the site was under an agricultural regime since woodland clearance as no evidence was identified to suggest it was ever used for settlement or industrial purposes.
