Summary

The earthworks of elaborate and well-preserved formal gardens at Kinderton Hall are a Scheduled Monument. It is late Elizabethan or Jacobean in date. The remains consist of several banks, ditches and terraced enclosure which have been added to the west of the medieval moat. There is also a prospect mound which gives extensive views across the estate and the town of Middlewich. A prospect mound is an artificial hill, created to provide a viewing platform of the landscaped view (or prospect).

Full Description

Earthworks of elaborate and well-preserved formal gardens at Kinderton Hall, consisting of several embanked, ditched & terraced enclosures. Incorporated the earthwork of the former moat (RN:753/1/1).

Large circular mound at SJ 70746689 was probably a garden feature. It is composed of sandy soil & small stones & is grass & tree covered. It is 3.7m high with a flat top c.2m sq. There is no trace of a building on it & it has no ditch. Not a motte. Probably ornamental, to hold a gazebo.

Ormerod suggests this mound probably supported a keep tower.

Garden enclosures and terraces seem to have been added to the west of the medieval moat. They lead to a long low terrace, ditched on either side, and running towards the prospect mound. This gives extensive views across the estate and the town of Middlewich. Late Elizabethan or Jacobean in date.
