Full Description
<1> Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME), 1986, Kinderton Hall - Garden Remains (Graphic Material). SCH4889.
Earthworks of elaborate and well-preserved formal gardens at Kinderton Hall, consisting of several embanked, ditched & terraced enclosures. Incorporated the earthwork of the former moat (RN:753/1/1).
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ76NW6/1964 (Index). SCH2487.
Large circular mound at SJ 70746689 was probably a garden feature. It is composed of sandy soil & small stones & is grass & tree covered. It is 3.7m high with a flat top c.2m sq. There is no trace of a building on it & it has no ditch. Not a motte. Probably ornamental, to hold a gazebo.
<3> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, 3/ (Y) (Book). SCH1389.
Ormerod suggests this mound probably supported a keep tower.
<4> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Turner R C 1987 13492 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
Garden enclosures and terraces seem to have been added to the west of the medieval moat. They lead to a long low terrace, ditched on either side, and running towards the prospect mound. This gives extensive views across the estate and the town of Middlewich. Late Elizabethan or Jacobean in date.
<5> English Heritage, Various, Schedule Entry (Scheduled Ancient Monuments Amendment) (Scheduling Record). SCH2950.
<6> Gifford and Partners, 1992, Archaeological Evaluation at King Street, Middlewich, Cheshire., R2056 (Client Report). SCH4167.
Archaeological and historical background given in desk top assessment undertaken in 1992.
