These volumes are the first in an account of the building activities of the crown. Buildings for shelter, defence or ornament, are inseparable from government, and in England public works have a long history extending over more than a thousand years. These books give an account of the royal castles, palaces and manor houses of England and Wales from the era of Offa's Dyke to the establishment of, what is now, the Ministry of Public Building and Works. An account of the royal castles, palaces and manor houses of England and Wales. The four extensive fold-out plans are of: Dover Castle; The Tower of London; The Medieval Palace of Westminster; and Windsor Castle.
