Oderic Vitalis describes the castle as an island probably because it was cut off by a water course running between the Roodee racecourse and the Dee Bridge. It has been suggested that this may have once been used as the outer bailey ditch. The potential monument is included in the gazetteer for the castle’s conservation plan (No. 40) (1 - 5).
