Summary

The placename 'Dernhale' is first mentioned in 1225. Darnhall was a manor of the earls of Chester and John le Scot, Earl of Chester 1232-37 died here. A manor is area of administration introduced as a feudal estate after the Norman Conquest and used for over 500 years after. It was later a royal manor of Edward I. The first monks of Darnhall apparently took over an existing Royal manor house.
