Monument record 2855/0/6 - Pillbox at Park Farm

Summary

This is a type 26 pillbox to the South of RAF Hooton Park Airfield, on the East to West route to the old airfield. Type 26 pillboxes were heavily constructed buildings, which were square with walls 1 foot 6 inches thick and 6 foot long internally. This pillbox is made of clay brick and concrete and unusually has two of it’s embrasures in the corners, pointing South and West. The embrasures are small rectangular openings in walls that allowed soldiers defended in the pillbox to shoot out at, or observe the enemy. The pillbox also has a thick anti-blast wall covering the entrance. It probably housed soldiers with light weaponry such as rifles and was part of the RAF Hooton Park defences. It was built during World War Two, a time when most other pillboxes around Britain were constructed.

Type 26 clay brick and concrete square pillbox, is located on the south side of the east to west route to the old Hooton airfield and is probably an airfield defence pillbox. The unusual feature of this pillbox is that two of the embrasures are in the corners pointing in the direction south and west. There is also a very thick anti-blast wall covering the entrance. Embrasures and entrance are currently blocked. In RAF Hooton Park Defences.

It is possible that this site is a duplicate of UORN 13710 (2855/0/8). Moved from SJ37157851 as a pillbox found neaby matches the description. Of the embrasures for the pillbox found, two of the three are unusually large, and along with the massively thick walls suggest that this pillbox was for use against tanks and other armoured vehicles rather than infantry.

<3> Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council, 2007, Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council Local List of Historic Buildings, LL23 (Index). SCH5437.

A hexagonal reinforced concrete structure with splayed machine gun ports on each face. Access at rear shielded by concrete blast wall. Part of a defensive line across the Wirral (see also Parkgate, Spital, Bromborough) to protect Birkenhead docks from a paratroop (or even landing craft) invasion on the Dee Estuary. Condition: Fair.
