Monument record 2855/0/8 - Pillbox at School Lane

Please read our .

Summary

This is a concrete re-enforced pillbox to RAF Hooton Park has not been relocated and is possibly a duplicate of CHER 2855/0/6. Pillboxes were squat heavily constructed concrete buildings designed as defensive structures. The sides normally all had an embrasure, which were small rectangular openings in walls used to allow soldiers defended in the pillbox to shoot out at, or observe the enemy. However this pillbox has three forward facing embrasures; it also has a detached exterior blast-protection wall covering the entrance. It was part of the RAF Hooton Park defences and probably housed soldiers with light weaponry such as rifles. It was built during World War Two, a time when most other pillboxes around Britain were constructed.
