Monument record 1331/2 - New Street: Terrace of Mill Workers' Cottages, Havannah Mill, Eaton

Please read our .

Summary

A terrace of sixteen mill workers' cottages (some now combined), located on the north side of New Street (now Havannah Lane) and most probably associated with the eighteenth century brassworks and later silk and corn mills of the Havannah Mill complex. Built in brick with segmental, arched openings, chimney stacks and chimney pots. Most of the mill complex has now been demolished, although the road bridge and weir (both Grade II listed) and parts of the water management system still exist. Also, in 2011, the site of Windsor Mill and associated terraced housing were subject to archaeological recording in 2011 (see 1331/5).

Havannah Mill Housing. A set of 16 terraced houses (some now combined) most probably associated with the earlier brassworks at the Havannah Mill. Built in brick with brick segmental arched openings (variable survival), chimneystacks and chimney pots. Probably merits listing.

Havannah. Industrial community on the river Dane near Congleton named in commemoration of British capture of Havannah in 1762. Copper works established by Charles Roe of Macclesfield, 1763, made brass wire and copper sheeting. Worked until early 19th century. There was also a silk mill and older corn mill. Only survivors are fine stone weir and a long row of brick-built worker's cottages with flag-stone rooves.

<3> Day, J, 1992, Monuments Protection Programme Industrial Monuments Assessment: The Brass Industry Step 1 Report (Report). SCH4339.

The industry established in this area was the last of the producers of brass in the 18th century, and evolved from earlier copper smelting. The smelting works in Macclesfield used local coal, and copper ores originally came from nearby Alderley Edge, from Coniston in the Lake District and also from Ecton Hill in Staffordshire. The early brass manufacturing site was constructed as an industrial village on the River Dane at Eaton, just north of Congleton.

<4> Nexus Heritage, 2012, Havannah Mill, Eaton, Congleton, Cheshire East: Archaeological Watching Brief, R3364 (Client Report). SCH6887.

In 2011, an archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land to the east of Macclesfield Road, as part of its re-development for residential purposes. The development area included the site of a demolished nineteenth century silk mill, Windsor Mill, also associated workers' housing (Windsor Row and the southern terrace of New Street), as recorded on historic Ordnance Survey mapping. Windsor Mill formed part of the now largely demolished Havannah Mill complex, located on the east bank of the River Dane, and comprising Havannah Mill (brass mill, later silk and flour mills, see 1331/1), Windsor Mill (silk mill), and associated terraced workers' cottages. The terraced housing of Windsor Row and the southern side of New Street was demolished at some time between 1926 and 1938. See record 1331/5 for further detail on the mill complex and the demolished rows of workers' cottages, of which the northern row of New Street is now the only surviving part.
