Summary

At some point prior to 1864 (when a published record of the event appears), excavations took place in the western floor of St John's Church in advance of building a new vestibule at the western end of the church. At that time, a group of medieval grave stones were uncovered and rubbings were produced. The gravestones were then re-buried, but it was observed that the layer of slabs went westward under the west wall of the nave.

At some point prior to 1864 (when a published record of the event appears), excavations happened in the western floor of St John's Church in advance of the construction of a new vestibule at the western end of the church.

At that time, a group of medieval grave stones were uncovered and rubbings were produced. The gravestones were then re-buried, but it was observed that the layer of slabs went westward under the west wall of the nave (1).
