Description

This event represents an historic building survey and archaeological excavation of the area between the ruined western tower and the main body of the church of St John the Baptist, undertaken in advance of the construction of a toilet block. The area involved was initially evaluated by means of a small trench 1.3m by 0.85m, excavated down to the required level in the area of the proposed drain sump against the north wall. As a result of this work, it was decided to restrict the depth of excavation of the new floor slab to 0.35m and to carry it out archaeologically. A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the trench for the foul drain.
