Monument record 2531/1/11 - Bollington Viaduct - Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway

In 1869 a branch line was constructed to Marple, through Bollington and Poynton. The line was opened in a bid to revive the Bollington cotton industry. The twenty-three arch viaduct is a local landmark and a stark reminder of Bollingtons’ industrial past.

Bollington Viaduct opened 1869 but now closed. A viaduct of twenty-two arches which carried the Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway across the River Dean Valley.

Consent for a local line from Macclesfield to Marple via Bollington (Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway) was given in 1864. Construction was slow despite the limited number of substantial engineering works, this viaduct being one of the few required. The line opened to passenger traffic in 1869 and freight traffic in 1870. The line closed in 1970.
