Consent for a local line from Macclesfield to Marple via Bollington (Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway) was given in 1864. Construction was slow despite the limited number of substantial engineering works, this cutting being one of the few required. The line opened to passenger traffic in 1869 and freight traffic in 1870. The line closed in 1970.
