Macclesfield, Bollington & Marple Railway opened in 1863. Route runs from Macclesfield through Bollington, Poynton, Middlewood and High Lane to Marple. This railway brought prosperity to the area during a period of uncertainty and trade disruption caused by the American Civil War. The length of the line was to be 10 miles, 7 furlongs, 450 links with 2 miles on level gradient and and 2 miles on a gradient of 1:132 or Less (1) (2).
