Full Description

A three-course linear brick-built wall was recorded during an archaeological watching brief, undertaken in 2021, at Woolfall Manor, Longhill Lane, Hankelow. The wall was found to persist on the horizon between the subsoil and the clean mid yellow sand natural. Notably, the wall survived the demolition of a previous outbuilding, an L-shaped barn, depicted on OS historic mapping (see CHER 15353/1). The wall exhibited a robust splayed brick-built base which suggests it may have been load bearing. It shared an alignment (north-east to south-west) with the previous agricultural building but did not directly underlie the external walls of that building. Therefore, this wall either represented an over engineered room partition which was excavated to a depth deeper than the foundations of the original building, or is the sole surviving remnant of an earlier building which was on an identical alignment to the previous L-shaped barn.

Two buildings are depicted on the 1842 tithe map for Audlem Township at the site of Woolfall Manor Farm. One of the buildings corresponds to Woolfall Manor, the other, a barn to its north. The barn (see CHER 15353/1) was subject to a level 2 building record in 2021, prior to its demolition.

The two buildings depicted on the tithe map lie in Plot 299, which is described as '2 Cottages And Gardens', owned by John Hervey and occupied by Luke Billington and John Evans.
