Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2021 during groundworks associated with the creation of a new swimming pool extension at Woolfall Manor, Longhill Lane, Hankelow, Cheshire CW3 0JQ (NGR SJ 68143 44915).
During the watching brief a single, linear, red brick wall was encountered during the reduction of the ground level for a new swimming pool. This brick wall was encountered within the footprint of the recently demolished L-shaped post medieval barn that once stood on the location. Given the construction of the structural remains, which had a substantial splayed brick-built footing, it is suggested that the wall may represent an earlier phase of building which pre-dated the now demolished barn. Following an analysis of the materials used to construct the wall and combining this information with an examination of available historic mapping data it is postulated that this earlier building may represent a redesign/reconstruction of the outbuilding at Woolfall Manor between 1842-1882.
