Description
A level 2 historic building record was undertaken in 2021 of a barn outbuilding at Woolfall Manor, Longhill Lane, Hankelow, Cheshire CW3 0JQ in advance of its demolition and redevelopment.
The building consists of a two storey L-shaped range comprised of two rectangular buildings, orientated NW-SE and NE-SW respectively. A single, rectangular building is depicted on the 1842 Tithe Map of Audlem Township in the location of the existing barn, and an L-shaped building is depicted in the same location on the later first edition OS map. Upon examination of the building it became clear that the NW-SE range stratigraphically predated the NE-SW range, butting up against the masonry rather than being keyed into it. This would suggest that the single rectangular building shown on the 1842 tithe map is in fact the existing NW-SE range which was extended by adding the NE-SW range some time between the production of the 1842 map and the Ordnance Survey six inch map of 1882.
