Full Description

<1> Higham N J, 2013, Poynton East: Heritage Assessment, Area 1 (Client Report). SCH7181.

Accommodation is used as a name by four mines in this small area - Accommodation Deep, Upper Accommodation, Lower Accommodation and Deep Accommodation. The name derives from the name for the lowest coal seam encountered at pits in the Poynton area (c.200-270m deep). All these mines probably dates from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century.

This mine was known as Upper Accommodation. Upper Accommodation Pit lies at the end of what was once a hedged and banked access track from the start of The Coppice, along the eastern side of the garden of Bridge Cottage, with what was the Macclesfield Borough Nuclear Bunker (see CHER4132/0/2) immediately to its south.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ9382, 1883 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

The access track and areas of spoil (or rough) ground are depicted in this area.
