Summary

Recent historic building assessment of the boundary walls at St Olave’s Church in 2013 have suggested that the southern boundary wall may be of medieval origin. It was suggested by the surveyor that the wall may belong to the nearby stone hall of Richard the Engineer. Observations made during the construction of the garage and showroom in 1960 noted a substantial ashlar wall surviving to a height of 3m and continuing for some distance on an east west alignment. Within the stretch of wall encountered in the 1960s there was a crudely inserted and subsequently blocked doorway at the western end and an arched opening towards the centre of the wall that may have been a window or altered doorway. The present assessment recorded a section of this wall some 3.8m in length surviving as the present southern boundary wall to St Olave’s Church. The survival of this wall suggests a strong potential for further archaeological discoveries associated with the medieval stone hall below the present garage structure.
