Please read our .

Summary

This section of the east side of the city walls extends from the Newgate (CHER 12000/25) to Barnaby’s Tower (CHER 12000/27). Being further south than the south-east angle of the Roman fortress, this section of the walls dates to the late eleventh or early twelfth centuries. It was damaged during the Civil War between 1644 and 1646, and between 1702 and 1708 it was converted into a raised promenade. It can also be assumed that the walls were subjected to various repairs throughout the medieval and post medieval periods.

Full Description

This section of the east side of the city walls extends from the Newgate (CHER 12000/25) to Barnaby’s Tower (CHER 12000/27). Being further south than the south-east angle of the Roman fortress, this section of the walls dates to the late eleventh or early twelfth centuries. It was damaged during the Civil War between 1644 and 1646, and between 1702 and 1708 it was converted into a raised promenade. It can also be assumed that the walls were subjected to various repairs throughout the medieval and post medieval periods. The section is of coursed red sandstone rubble, and parts have a plinth with a weathered cap. Some patching is evident on the added buttresses. This section is approximately 290m long, with the wall-walk about 2m wide. Please see the linked listed building record for structural detail (8).
