Description

Brief structural survey of the Civil war breach in the walls at the Roman Gardens in Souter's Lane. Four periods of masonry are visible in the outer wall face, the oldest has narrow irregular courses and wide mortar filled joints, several massive buttresses were subsequently added to the wall to strengthen it, then about 28m south of the Newgate there is a substantial area of relatively recent, good quality masonry extending from ground level to the top of the stonework and finally the parapet was added in recent times (nineteenth?)
