Full Description
Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded a series of metalled surfaces and pathways, to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. (2). A total of four surfaces were identified during the evaluation, one of which was a metalled surface within Trench 2c (this monument, the other surfaces are CHER 10652 and CHER 10654) (1, 2).
This surface was identified in Trench 2c and was found above a nineteenth century levelling deposit (CHER 10650); it is not clear if this was a pathway or if it was associated with a nineteenth century structure found in this area of the churchyard, as depicted in Romey’s south-east view of the cathedral dated 1854 (2).
