Summary

Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded a series of metalled surfaces and pathways, to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. and to the north-west, west of the west range. Identified in Trench 5b, this surface was comprised of sandstone, and although it was not associated with any artefacts, it was assumed by the excavators to have been post medieval in date.

Full Description

Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded a series of metalled surfaces and pathways, to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. and to the north-west, west of the west range (1, 2). A total of four surfaces were identified during the evaluation, one of which was a sandstone surface to the north of Bishop’s Palace (this monument, the other surfaces are to the south of the cathedral, CHER 10652 and CHER 10653). Identified in Trench 5b, the surface was comprised of sandstone, and although it was not associated with any artefacts, it was assumed by the excavators to have been post medieval in date (1, 2).
