Full Description
Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded evidence of relatively short-lived post medieval structures and surfaces to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. (2). In addition to post medieval burial horizons (see CHER 10640/17/2), evaluation Trench 3 contained a foundation trench containing the rubble foundations for a substantial wall.
The foundation trench contained late eighteenth to early nineteenth century pottery and it is possible that this represents the foundation of a building depicted on an 1854 drawing of the cathedral by Romney (1). The building does not appear on 1899 OS mapping, thus was relatively short-lived. Other post medieval structural remains nearby include a culvert (CHER 10651) and metalled surfaces or pathways (CHER 10652).
