Full Description
Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded a brick-built culvert that appeared to post-date an eighteenth century building that had once been at this location, to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. (1, 2).
The culvert was located in Trench 2b, whose position approximately corresponds to a mid- to late-eighteenth century building, which is first depicted on Hunter's 1789 map of Chester. However, it was clear from the brick types used in the construction of this culvert, its stratigraphic position, and its association with nineteenth century pottery that this drain was later in date than the eighteenth century building (1).
