Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the rear of 29 Foregate St. in 1998 identified a number of Roman features (1). The investigations remain in unpublished and no trench plan is attached to the available archive notes. However, the excavators identified a two walls forming a corner and a rubbish pit in Trenches 6 and 7 respectively (1).
The walls ran east-west and north-south, and was comprised of angular and sub angular blocks, in parts bonded with clay, and animal bone and pottery was reported to have been found in association. In part of the excavation trench was a deposit containing a relatively large amount of bone, pottery, and charcoal, and was interpreted as a the fill of a rubbish pit (1).
