Full Description

Evidence of post medieval industrial activity, specifically tanning, was recorded during several phases of archaeological investigation at Union Street in 2007. The investigations were carried out by L-P Archaeology and comprised the excavation of five evaluation trenches, two in April and three in August followed by an excavation of a discrete area in the northern half of the site and a general watching brief during construction works.

The initial trenches excavated in April did not produce any evidence of industrial activity (1) however subsequent trenches excavated in August identified an 18th century tanning pit in trench 2 of that phase of work containing small quantities of oak bark (2)
