Description

Following earlier archaeological works on site (see ECH4377, R2784), this event represents work to evaluate and record the extent of Roman activity within the footprint of the building, in addition a watching brief was carried out during all groundworks. The earliest evidence for activity on the site comes from a Roman ditch running north-south across the site, between Union St. and Forest St. This ditch and its associated deposits produced several sherds of Samian ware as well as orange ware and Roman roof tile. The ditch is thought to represent an early defensive phase of the fortress, and can be seen in Grosvenor Park to the south as well as on a separate plot of land to the north of the site. No medieval deposits were identified, and post-medieval make-up comprised the majority of deposits in the area.
