Full Description
Previous archaeological investigation and documentary evidence from the 20th century indicates that although a significant proportion of the Roman fortress baths had been removed by stone robbing in the late Saxon period and again in the 14th century, fragments of in situ Roman masonry survived well into the 20th century on occasion being incorporated into the medieval buildings on Bridge Street.
19th century excavations at the Feathers Inn concentrated mainly on the below ground Roman remains, however it was suggested by Mason et al in 2005 that the medieval undercrofts that were demolished at the time rested on Roman wall foundations, actively incorporating them into the later buildings.
