Description

Following intervention by the Ancient Monuments Inspectorate a limited amount of excavation was allowed on the western part of the Grosvenor precinct redevelopment scheme (ECH3128). The south east corner of the basilica and the whole eastern half of the baths suite as far as the perimeter wall was subsequently recorded. A series of three narrow trenches excavated on an east-west alignment to the rear of 14-22 Newgate Street encountered evidence of two barrack buildings and a centurion's house. Trial holes excavated beforehand revealed evidence of the Defences.
