Full Description
No 41-43 consists of a 3 bay 18th century town house of which No 42 forms the east and central part and 43 the west bay.
The house is of brown brick in irregular English garden wall bond with a grey slate roof. The central bay projects slightly with partly painted stone quoins. The interior has a sandstone cellar of possible medieval origin but is now lined with modern material. No 43 has been significantly re-modelled in the 20th century. (2)
Structural evidence of the post medieval building at 41 White Friars was recorded during archaeological investigations in 2006. The investigations included a number of test trenches excavated within the building and garden to the rear. The structural evidence recovered included a cellar back filled in the 19th century towards the rear of the property in trench 5 and traces of internal features of an 18th century date recorded during later construction work. In addition, an 18th century pit was recorded in trench 13 adjacent to the western external wall and evidence of post medieval garden soils was recorded in trench 4 to the rear of the property. (1)
