Description
A watching brief carried out during the excavation of foundation and service trenches and during reduction of ground levels to the rear of the premises.
The aim of the work was to identify the nature and extent, and to preserve by record, all deposits of archaeological significance that were to be affected as part of the proposed development.
In total, 18 areas were observed and recorded. Modern disturbance of a post 1833 date was recorded in the upper fills in all areas although undisturbed deposits were encountered in a number of pits. The most notable feature was a cut feature, possibly a ditch, with some evidence to suggest a bank on the north side. The only artefacts recovered were late medieval pottery and a single copper alloy object.
