CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE ST WERBURGH STREET 595-1/4/350 (South side) 10/01/72 Nos.29 AND 31 GV II 2 shops. 1895-6. By John Douglas. For Mr Chapman and Mr Densem. Brick-nogged timber framing, brown brick, tile-hanging; brown tile roof. EXTERIOR: No.29 is 3-storey, No.31 2-storey. Modern shopfronts of no interest. The small-framed second storey has a 2;3;2 light casement with 2 transoms and a casement of five 1-pane lights to No.29 and a 2;3;2 light casement with 2 transoms to No.31. The third storey of No.29 has an oriel with coved apron and lean-to roof in a gable of banded tile-hanging; the main roof sweeps down to eaves above the central second storey casement; timber framing with quadrant and curved braces above the west window to No.31. The east face to Godstall Lane has a corbelled shaped stack, now truncated at eaves; one casement per storey, of three 3-pane lights under moulded segmental arch to the first storey, similar but of 5 lights to the second storey and of 3 lights with moulded brick mullions to the third storey, under a gable with fishscale tile hanging; replaced door in yellow sandstone case. The west side has timber-framed upper storey with a small partly leaded light adjoining the corner post and a 5-light mullioned 2-transomed casement under a cove-jettied fishscale tile-hung gable. This item was designed to group with, but simpler than, Nos 15-27 (odd) St Werburgh Street (qv). INTERIOR: surfaces in the shops are covered. Upper storeys not inspected.
