The east and part of the central bay of a probably symmetrical town house, now with Nos 37 & 39 (qv) an office; the redeveloped west bay of the town house forms No.43 (qv). c1700, altered. Brown brick in irregular English garden wall bond; grey slate roof, ridge parallel with front. EXTERIOR: the former central bay projects slightly with partly painted flush stone quoins at its east corner; both bays have painted stone plinth and bevelled floor bands, part cut flush, to second and third storeys. Windows have painted stone sills and wedge lintels with cambered soffits. The first storey has a flush 12-pane sash, east, a door of 6 fielded panels in a case with small cornice and hood, a later tripartite sash of 4;12;4 panes and a door, now blocked, of 2 flush;2 fielded;2 glazed panels with moulded architrave, cornice and small hood. The second storey has a later tripartite 4;12;4 pane sash, probably in place of 2 sashes, and in the former central bay 2 flush 12-pane sashes. The third storey has a flush 12-pane sash and, in the central bay, a flush 12-pane sash and a replaced 12-pane horned recessed sash; cast-iron rainwater pipe and head; plain stone coping to parapet. Ridge chimney, east. INTERIOR: the cellar, probably of medieval origin, is lined; sandstone winder stair; door of 6 fielded panels. The first storey east front room has 2 doors of 6 fielded panels and a chamfered oak beam; the west front room has a chamfered oak beam and a corner breast; a blocked corner breast in back east room. The stair is replaced. The second storey east front room has door of 6 fielded panels, panelled case to tripartite sash and an eared architrave to blocked fireplace; the west front room has door of 6 fielded panels, 2 panelled embrasures, a blocked fireplace with eared architrave and overmantel with three looking-glass panels, 2 probably replaced longitudinal beams and cornices. The third storey has doors of 6 fielded panels, a mid C19 wooden fireplace in the west front room and an eared architrave to blocked fireplace in the east front room.
