Summary

During a watching brief carried out in 1985 to the rear of 41 - 45 Foregate St., a relatively substantial Roman period occupation layer, in addition to features cut into the natural boulder clay, were found. Although reported only in a preliminary way, the occupation or debris layer is described as 0.35m thick, comprised of sediment, charcoal, clay, daub, and some finds.

Full Description

During a watching brief carried out in 1985 to the rear of 41 - 45 Foregate St., a relatively substantial Roman period occupation layer, in addition to features cut into the natural boulder clay, were found (1). Although reported only in a preliminary way, the occupation or debris layer is described as 0.35m thick, comprised of sediment, charcoal, clay, daub, and some finds (1). The deposit may be associated with a possible hearth (CHER 8535), and was sealed by a surface interpreted as a north - south trackway (CHER 8536) (1). Due to the limited nature of the excavations, no other comment is possible.
