Monument record 8046 - Roman Ditch and Features, Rylands Garage

A series of Roman deposits containing finds dating to the second century cutting into the underlying natural clay and into a structure of some kind (CHER 8045) at the site of the former Rylands Garage (1). Three linear gullies, a pit and post holes were recorded in Trench 1, while a larger ditch (truncating CHER 8045) and two smaller ditches were found in Trench 4.

The ditch was aligned east - west, ran along the north side of the trench, and contained a large quantity of pottery and animal bone. An amount of lead working and iron waste was recovered from these features, indicating that metalworking was taking place in the vicinity.
