Description
Archaeological investigations carried out in the pre-determination phase of an application at Volunteer Street comprised four 2m x 2m test pits dug within the former club.
The results of trench 1 included Victorian structural remains, post medieval and medieval cultivation soils and a possible Roman/Saxon layer at a depth of 1.66m. Trench 2 also identified Victorian structural remains along with similar cultivation soils to that recorded in trench 1. The trench terminated at a depth of 1.74m at a probable Roman layer. Trench 3 recorded only post medieval garden soils as a result of some truncation to the archaeological deposits while trench 4 located a number of post medieval pits associated with the houses on Park Street.
