Archaeological investigations at 4-6 Volunteer Street in 2013 recorded traces of Roman activity at the base of two trenches. This site is located in the southern canabae legionis.
The evidence comprised a layer at the base of trench 1 [context 115], identified at a depth of 1.66m below ground level. This layer contained red sandstone fragments and was tentatively interpreted as a demolition deposit. This deposit was overlain by a cultivation soil of possible Roman date [context 114] with only Roman finds recovered from it, however, this layer could equally represent later ridge and furrow. The evidence from trench 2 comprised a small number of features at the base of the trench (at a depth of 1.74m) including a possible linear cut [context 222] a possible demolition layer [context 220] and [context 221] which may represent a late Roman structural horizon.
