Description

Excavations at 67 Eaton Road carried out by the present owners and authors of the article (1). The evaluation has indicated evidence of multi period activity from the prehistoric to the post medieval however it should be noted that the site was previously owned and excavated by Prof R Newstead and evidence may have originated elsewhere. TI recorded substantial quantities of Roman pottery together with post medieval wares. TII recorded some first century pottery, two parallel linear features, several post holes and four stakeholes. TIII indicated primarily post medieval evidence, a rubble scatter was noted and a probable fourth century wall foundation. This foundation was overlaid by a rough stony layer with evidence of burning to suggest metal working or glass manufacture. No dating evidence was recorded however TIV was excavated as a result of nearby discovery of human skeletal material The trench contained sheep bone, molten glass, fourteenth to fifteenth century pottery, Roman pottery, copper alloy and enamel strap pendant, sandstone, limestone and glass tesserae within a single pit. TV evidence was primarily late medieval to post medieval pottery and brick TVI large quantities of unstratified material were recorded in the rubble of a nineteenth century path (1).
