Monument record 11154 - Medieval industrial activity at Ebury Place

Summary

Archaeological investigations carried out over a period of years between 1994 and 2000 in the garden of 67 Eaton Road identified a number of medieval features suggesting industrial activity in the area. Although no boundary evidence was encountered, it was suggested by the excavator that the plot was formed in the medieval period with characteristic backyard activity away from the road. The evidence consisted of large quantities of finds from accumulation deposits including assemblages indicative of glass working, potting, tile making and non-ferrous metallurgy. A shallow pit [H48] was identified containing evidence from a 13th to 14th century date including an over fired rod handle and a piece of heat distorted forest glass quarry suggestive of glass working. A second, later, pit [G10} was also recorded containing a droplet of melted glass and a tile waster and pottery of a broadly 15th century date. Residual finds were also encountered from later deposits including many droplets of melted glass, pottery wasters, jewellery of pewter and many metal fragments. Small quantities of imported wares were also encountered including Saintonge, Stamford and Spanish type wares
