Description

Subsequent evaluation undertaken in 1992 at 32-36 Foregate street recorded evidence from a further three trenches across the site (following ECH3604). Report was written up in 2011 following a 20 year gap and there are likely to be limitations in the results with inconsistencies and incomplete evidence. A reasonable assemblage of Roman pottery and ceramic building material was recovered along with a coin minted in AD 313-315. A small quantity of Saxon material was also recorded, despite its small size it is however important given the ephemeral nature of Saxon remains. Taking the results of the evaluation and excavation together it is clear that there are significant Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval evidence existing on the site. The recording of a Roman feature overlain by a probable Saxon soil level is highly significant as it provides further evidence of the character of this part of the city in the post Roman period. The remains of two cellars or undercrofts or probably medieval date close to the street frontage also give an indication of the form and structure of buildings in the area. Boundary evidence was also recorded. Evidence of post medieval metalworking including three hearths and significant quantities of waste was also recorded.
