Full Description
An east - west oriented gully or foundation trench, containing pottery dating to between the third and fourth centuries, and a coin of Constantine I (AD 313 - 315) identified during excavations at 32 - 36 Foregate St. in 1992 (1). At the western end of Trench V, 2.15m below surface, the feature was cut into natural subsoil, was 0.75m deep, and its width could not be determined as it extended belong the limits of excavation.
Its fill contained cobbles, sandstone fragments, pieces of Roman tile, pottery and the coin (1). Mixed later deposits contained some Roman ceramic building material, suggesting the possibility of a foundation trench for this feature, although this interpretation is not clear.
