Description

Excavation on land to the north of Boughton Hall, carried out in July 2007, followed by a watching brief on groundworks associated with proposed development. Previous work carried out on the site include an archaeological building assessment and a desk-based assessment. The proposed development of the site consisted of the construction of extra care accommodation, the refurbishment of Boughton Hall and demolition of a late nineteenth century unstable extension as well as the construction of car parking areas and some landscaping. The earliest activity on site is of Roman date, represented by a horseshoe-shaped structure, interpreted as a possible animal shelter outside the Roman settlement. Medieval deposits were identified, and appear to have been agricultural in character. Seventeenth and nineteenth century garden soils seal these deposits, confirming the conclusions of the desk-based assessment (i.e. gardens and an orchard associated with the Hall).
