Description
Trench plan from the WSI only (rest lost in a fire)
It is clear that the grounds of Boughton Hall have been modified during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The evidence for outbuildings to the East of the Hall indicate that the estate has been subject to some major alterations in the past. The archaeological evidence is reinforced by the main building itself, which was heavily altered during this period.
All the trenches excavated show evidence of garden soil being added to the site in order to either level the area or form a garden area. Most features uncovered below this appeared to be post medieval, and located close to the modern ground surface. There was a limited amount of evidence for earlier activity on the site which could not be dated precisely due to the sparse nature of the finds, although the earliest evidence appears to be Romano-British.
