Full Description
Archaeological investigations in the gardens surrounding Boughton Hall in 2005 encountered evidence of activity in the 18th century consisting of a stone lined pit feature in trench 8 of an evaluation carried out in the grounds and in trench 4 of a separate archaeological monitoring of works in the same year.
The evidence from the archaeological evaluation consisted of a wall [808] sealed by a demolition layer [804] encountered at a depth of 0.75m below present ground level. The wall comprised mixed sandstone and reused decorative blocks as a foundation course similar to those seen elsewhere in Boughton and believed to be 18th-19th century in date. A stone lined pit was also encountered in the same trench containing pottery of an 18th-19th century date. (1)
The evidence from the archaeological monitoring consisted of a late post medieval pit of an 18th or 19th century date cutting an earlier ditch feature in trench 4 to the south of the evaluation trench. No dating evidence from the ditch was recovered. (2)
